Abbey People wins Social Enterprise of the Year Award

We are delighted to share that we have won the Social Enterprise of the Year award at the Cambridge Independent Business Awards.

The business awards celebrated all business sectors in Cambridge with a gala event held at the Great Hall at King’s College on 26th September.

The Social Enterprise of the Year award was to be presented to an organisation that is making a great contribution to tackling social and environmental challenges in our region.

As we are sure you are aware, Abbey People was founded (in 2013) to help improve the lives of those living in our ward.

Our Food Hub, launched during the pandemic, helps tackle food poverty and is now evolving towards a social supermarket.

Our conservation work on Coldham’s Brook is helping to protect a rare chalk stream. We organise litter picks, run youth clubs and family activities, provide support for families, organise the Abbey Voices choir and have run a coffee truck project providing valuable training for young people.

You may not know that we actually have projects that cover 10 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals which include:

  1. No poverty
  2. Zero hunger
  3. Good health and well-being
  4. Decent work and economic growth
  5. Reduced inequalities
  6. Sustainable cities and communities
  7. Climate action
  8. Life below water
  9. Life on land
  10. Peace, justice and strong institutions

Together with others, our work is helping to ensure Cambridge meets these goals by 2030. You can be part of the story. If your ESG work aligns, we would love to hear from you. You can get in touch by emailing ceo@abbeypeople.org.uk.

Fellow social enterprise finalists were Allia, Fitness Rush CIC, FutureIN from Training and Apprenticeships in Construction, Get Synergised and OWL Bikes – all organisations that are doing wonderful work. Congratulations to OWL Bikes who were awarded Highly Commended.

A special thank you to The Cambridge Building Society who sponsored this award, Cambridge Independent, Iliffe Media, Paul Brackley and Keith Heppell who we must credit for the photo used alongside this blog.
