We are delighted to share that Abbey People has been chosen by Cambridge City Mayor Cllr Maria Cleminson to be one of her chosen charities for her civic year.
As a long-standing Abbey resident, Maria has spent years volunteering with local organisations and championing projects that bring people together. Alongside her commitment to supporting local communities, she is passionate about protecting Cambridge’s heritage and improving the city’s green spaces through biodiversity and environmental projects.
Those priorities closely reflect Abbey People’s own mission.
Every day we work alongside local people to create a stronger, healthier and more connected community. Whether it’s supporting families through Barnwell Basket, tackling loneliness, bringing neighbours together through community events, creating opportunities for children and young people, or helping residents care for their local environment, our work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.
We’re especially excited that sustainability is one of the Mayor’s priorities this year. Through projects such as our Swish clothes swap events, Repair Café, community growing initiatives and other activities that encourage people to reduce waste and care for their neighbourhood, we’re showing that looking after the environment can also strengthen community connections.
Being selected as one of the Mayor’s Charities of the Year is a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on the work taking place across Abbey. It will help introduce more people to our projects, celebrate the incredible volunteers, partners and supporters who make them possible, and raise vital funds so we can continue supporting local residents.
We’re looking forward to working with the Mayor throughout the year and welcoming her to many of our events. Together, we hope to inspire even more people to get involved and make a positive difference in our community.
