Parent Power in Abbey

Abbey Parent Power launched in Autumn 2024, delivered in partnership between The Brilliant Club, Abbey People, Cambridge City Council, Cambridge Ahead, Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Cambridge.

Parent Power has two main aims, to develop parents/carers into higher education experts and to support parents/carers to campaign for positive change in their local communities.

Community Organiser for Abbey Parent Power, Sophie Waring, has been working in Abbey on a weekly basis and runs regular group meetings with parents/carers. During the meetings, families receive information and guidance on key areas of higher education. Meetings so far have included topics such as study skills from Anglia Ruskin University and a guide to apprenticeships delivered by First Intuition.

Community organising is also an essential step in the cycle of social change, Sophie says that through community listening in Abbey, a key theme that arose from speaking with parents/carers is raising aspirations for young people in Abbey.

Our key goal is to connect families to local initiatives that will enhance young people’s wellbeing and build a sense of belonging within the community in Abbey’ – Sophie, Community Organiser for Abbey Parent Power
