The Hub Opens in Abbey – Cambridge Independent

Cambridge MP opens The Hub in Abbey

Daniel Zeichner, Cambridge MP and Alex Collis, Cambridge Deputy Mayor have officially opened “The Hub”, a new community space in the Abbey ward of Cambridge. Abbey People has merged with East Barnwell Community Association. Together, they have created The Hub to serve residents. Plans for The Hub include a meeting room for hire and a base for community events. Also, drop-ins will be available with many organisations, such as the NHS and Cambridge City Council.

Abbey People hope to offer support with issues such as jobs, health, education and more. For example, we’ve been helping people with universal credit applications. We also have a printer in case people don’t have one available. The Hub will initially be open from 9am-2pm on weekdays, as well as opening for some weekend events when required.

We are planing to host some coffee mornings to meet local people. These will also allow people to drop in if they need help. In the future, we are hoping to be able to start dispensing food to those in need. The Hub is partially funded by the council, however we also receive donations from a range of funding sources.

Abbey is one of the most deprived areas in Cambridge. We at Abbey People hope to develop a community cohesion and support those most at risk in the area.
